Everettian rationality: defending Deutsch’s approach to probability in the Everett interpretation
نویسنده
چکیده
An analysis is made of Deutsch’s recent claim to have derived the Born rule from decisiontheoretic assumptions. It is argued that Deutsch’s proof must be understood in the explicit context of the Everett interpretation, and that in this context, it essentially succeeds. Some comments are made about the criticism of Deutsch’s proof by Barnum, Caves, Finkelstein, Fuchs, and Schack; it is argued that the flaw which they point out in the proof does not apply if the Everett interpretation is assumed. r 2003 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Understanding Deutsch’s Probability in a Deterministic Multiverse
Difficulties over probability have often been considered fatal to the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics. Here I argue that the Everettian can have everything she needs from ‘probability’ without recourse to indeterminism, ignorance, primitive identity over time or subjective uncertainty: all she needs is a particular rationality principle. The decision-theoretic approach recently deve...
متن کاملProbability in the Everett World: Comments on Wallace and Greaves∗
It is often objected that the Everett interpretation of QM cannot make sense of quantum probabilities, in one or both of two ways: either it can’t make sense of probability at all, or it can’t explain why probability should be governed by the Born rule. David Deutsch has attempted to meet these objections. He argues not only that rational decision under uncertainty makes sense in the Everett in...
متن کاملDecisions, Decisions, Decisions: Can Savage Salvage Everettian Probability?∗
Critics object that the Everett view cannot make sense of quantum probabilities, in one or both of two ways: either it cannot make sense of probability at all, or it cannot explain why probability should be governed by the Born rule. David Deutsch has attempted to meet these objections by appealing to an Everettian version of Savage’s rational decision theory. Deutsch argues not only that an an...
متن کاملOn the Everettian epistemic problem
Recent work in the Everett interpretation has suggested that the problem of probability can be solved by understanding probability in terms of rationality. However, there are two problems relating to probability in Everett — one practical, the other epistemic — and the rationality-based program directly addresses only the practical problem. One might therefore worry that the problem of probabil...
متن کاملQuantum Probability and Decision Theory, Revisited
An extended analysis is given of the program, originally suggested by Deutsch, of solving the probability problem in the Everett interpretation by means of decision theory. Deutsch’s own proof is discussed, and alternatives are presented which are based upon different decision theories and upon Gleason’s Theorem. It is argued that decision theory gives Everettians most or all of what they need ...
